چکیده

We report on the fundamental electrochemical properties of inherently hydrophobic Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes MWNT electrodes and acid treated MWNTs. The electrochemical response of the electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy using the redox probe of (Fe(CN)6 /Fe(CN)6 , which has well-known kinetic behaviour on carbon surfaces. Comparisons were made between the electrochemical behaviour observed at MWNT electrodes and electrochemically polished glassy carbon, GCE. Confirmation of carbon oxygen functionalities on the surface of acid treated nanotubes was accomplished by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Slow electron transfer kinetics with a peak separation larger than 200 eV, and an electron transfer resistance of approximately 370V were observed on pristine MWNTs. However acid treatment was found to significantly improve the electron transfer kinetics of Fe(CN)6 23/24 redox couple, approaching almost reversible ET kinetics. Acid treatment modifies the charge carrier density at the surface by introducing surface states and serves to facilitate electron transfer. The better wetting properties of functionalised carbon nanotubes and the higher local density of states as compared to untreated MWNT could be responsible for favouring faster ET kinetics.

Synthesis and characterisation of a trithiocarbonate for the decoration of carbon nanostructures.

A novel aldehyde-bearing trithiocarbonate has been synthesized and reacted with carbon nanostructures with different dimensionalities (nanotubes, fullerenes, graphite). The decoration of these carbon nanostructures with trithiocarbonate moieties should provide a powerful tool for the design of advanced carbon nanofillers.

Flexoelectricity in Carbon Nanostructures: Nanotubes, Fullerenes, and Nanocones.

We report theoretical analysis of the electronic flexoelectric effect associated with nanostructures of sp(2) carbon (curved graphene). Through the density functional theory calculations, we establish the universality of the linear dependence of flexoelectric atomic dipole moments on local curvature in various carbon networks (carbon nanotubes, fullerenes with high and low symmetry, and nanocon...

Imaging Carbon Nanostructures with SPMs

The unique mechanical and electronic properties of fullerenes, nanotubes, graphene and carbon nanoribbons make them very promising materials for nanotechnological applications. First-principles calculations of forces and currents between a tip and carbon nanostructures show that the rich variety of image patterns found in atomic-scale AFM and STM measurements can be rationalized in terms of the...

Hydrogen-induced disintegration of fullerenes and nanotubes: An ab initio study

We use ab initio density-functional calculations to study hydrogen-induced disintegration of single-wall and multiwall carbon fullerenes and nanotubes. Our results indicate that hydrogen atoms preferentially chemisorb along lines in sp2 bonded carbon nanostructures, locally weakening the carbon bonds and releasing stress. For particular structural arrangements, hydrogen helps to relieve the acc...

Morphology Change and Structural ‎Evaluation of Carbon Nanostructures

In this study, the change of porosity and roughness of carbon nanostructures, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphene was investigated according to oxidation process. The effect of oxidation was more sensible on smoother surface of nanostructures. Oxidation increases surface roughness of graphene up to 5.2% and porosity up to 35.2%. While, roughness of hummers graphene is 13....
